Chalfant Hall CCAC, Allegheny-West, Pittsburgh

Chalfant Hall, part of Community College of Allegheny County’s North Side Pittsburgh campus, was a former mansion built by Henry Chalfant. Henry Chalfant controlled Spang, Chalfant and Co., a steel and iron manufacturer that he inherited from his father. The 1900, four-story, yellow brick mansion was once part of Millionaire’s Row in the Allegheny West Historic District. CCAC acquired the property in 1981 and is renovating the historic mansion into its new Center for Faculty Innovation.

The renovation preserves the general floor plan layout, and some key architectural features, such as the historic materials, original millwork, fireplaces, ornate tile, a grand wooden staircase, stained glass windows, bookcases, and pocket doors. The new facility will hold faculty offices, conference rooms, classrooms, and digital studios. The new upgrades include accessible restrooms, a kitchenette, two new egress stairs, an elevator, new landscaping, and an accessible entrance. New mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment will be added, as well. Hayes Design Group is overseeing the project, and citySTUDIO and Milton Ogot, Architect have been consulted on the building’s interior restoration.
