The McNaugher School Rehabilitation Pittsburgh, PA

The McNaugher School was a former public elementary school in Perry South, Pittsburgh. Since its closure in 2012, the building sat vacant until the North Side Partnership Project bought the building from the Pittsburgh Public School District, with the plan of turning it into a mixed-use community center with community services, private business offices for rent, and public assembly space. The typical school layout made this idea feasible, with a large central corridor and classrooms on either side. The spacious classrooms have high ceilings, good natural light, and integral closets. Along with a third floor gym, the pool in the basement will be utilized if funding allows in the future.

Our work began with a preliminary study, cost estimate, and budget for future work.  Different tenants included the local magistrate, a daytime drop-in shelter, a church, youth sports and afterschool programming, business offices, and many others. The various tenants required different public and private entry, parking, and accessibility, all of which had to be balanced when laying out the building and improvements. The project has received partially funded and is proceeding with the initial phase of renovations.
