Row House Renovation 46th St., Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh, PA

The rear addition and the roof’s redesign created many design opportunities, but as a 13.5-foot wide row house, possibilities were also very limiting. With clerestory windows in the new roof structure, and a light well next to the stairs, we brought in the sort of openness associated with grand mansions into a very small space. The modest additional cost of the clerestory windows and light well totally transformed the feel of the space. Placing the kitchen centrally improved connection of common spaces, and allowed for the dining room to better flex as an office or different usage. Combined with the quality of finishes and details, these design decisions made a home that felt much larger than its small size.
